With good management, we can put Dutch elm disease back on the map

Datum: 18 january 2021

It seemed like we had kind of forgotten about it, but Dutch elm disease is still everywhere. Last year there was an upsurge and the disease made many victims again. With a little money and effort, we could have saved many beautiful and iconic elms.

This year we were caught off guard again; the number of reports of diseased elms was on the rise, and suddenly there was renewed attention. Early in the season (late April) the first diseased elms were encountered. In the months that followed, more and more elms arrived (Haarlem 180, Schiedam 60, Amsterdam over 700, Arnhem 20 to name a few). From all parts of the country news reports and reports from managers came in about Dutch elm disease. It was noticeable that the numbers were much higher than in previous years. These high numbers are unnecessary. Despite the fact that we have had Dutch elm disease for over a hundred years, knowledge and skill regarding good elm management does not seem to be present in everyone.
