From rescue to tradition: the annual vaccination of the elm in Hedemünden
Sometimes a tree is more than just a tree. In the Hedemünden cemetery there is an impressive elm, which has stretched its branches across the landscape for generations. A symbol of strength, history and impermanence. In 2008, this large tree was in danger of falling prey to Dutch elm disease. There was no budget for protection, but the thought of losing this elm was unthinkable.
DutchTrig made an important decision: this elm had to stay. Therefore, the tree was vaccinated free of charge with the world’s only biological vaccine against Dutch elm disease. An act of conviction that has since become a tradition. Year after year, the vaccination returns, and what began as a one-time rescue, is now a regular part of the management of this special tree.
The elm of Hedemünden is not only a monument in the landscape, but also a living proof of what is possible with the right care and dedication. Meanwhile, Funck Baumpflege is responsible for its annual vaccination, and thanks to this effort, the tree remains healthy and strong.
From 2008 to the present, and hopefully for many years to come, this elm remains an inspiration. A tree with a story, protected by a promise.
