DutchTrig® is a microbial product proven as a preventive vaccination in the fight against Dutch Elm Disease. In addition to its application in the Netherlands since 1992, DutchTrig® has also been employed successfully in other countries such as the United States (2005), Germany (2006), Sweden (2010) and the United Kingdom (2016). Annual research is showing how many injected elms have been preserved as a result of this treatment. This rate of success was extremely high in 2017: following injections of DutchTrig®, 99.5% of the injected elms in the Netherlands remained healthy. In the United Kingdom and Sweden, this was even 100%. And in 2018, even more elms can be protected thanks to the authorisation for marketing this product in Denmark and Norway.
Set for the future
The importance of urban green space has been receiving even more attention lately. This is due not only to the fact that we feel more comfortable in a green environment with clean air but also to our efforts to mitigate climate change with its periods of extreme heat and rainfall. The leaves of trees provide shade and cooler temperatures and help to remove impurities from the air while their huge root systems and canopies are important for water management in cities, towns and villages. Since elms have a high tolerance to air pollution, provide a transparent canopy, and thrive in many types of soil, they are the perfect choice for development into fully mature trees in an urban environment and for contributing to pleasant living conditions.
Research results for 2017
DutchTrig® has been responsible for preserving many elm trees for more than 25 years. In 2017, this rate of success was 100% in Sweden, the United Kingdom, the New England region in the United States, and 99.7% in Germany. In the Netherlands, 99.5% of the treated elms remained healthy. The fact sheet for 2017 provides even more figures about how elm trees are being protected.
2018: authorisation for marketing in Denmark and Norway
Obviously, we will also be protecting elms in 2018! This year, DutchTrig® was authorised for marketing in Denmark and Norway. Proof that these countries, too, recognise the value of elm trees and are taking a more active approach to protecting them.
